Protect Our Winters (POW) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Founded by professional snowboarder Jeremy Jones in 2007, POW turns passionate outdoor people into effective climate advocates. POW leads a community of athletes, thought pioneers and forward-thinking business leaders to affect systemic political solutions to climate change.

The past decade has been the warmest on record. 2016 was the  hottest year ever recorded and 2017 is already on track top it. Meanwhile, the northern hemisphere has already lost a million square miles of spring snowpack since 1970—an area three times the size of Texas.  Snow levels are rising in elevation and winters are shorter. Climate change is already  affecting winter.

By 2007, pro snowboarder Jeremy Jones found that more and more resorts he’d always counted on for good riding were closed due to lack of snow. Something was clearly going on, and he felt the need to act. But he couldn’t find any organizations focused on mobilizing the snowsports community on climate—there was a gap between the impacts that climate change was already having on our mountains, and any organized action being taken to address it. And so Jeremy founded Protect Our Winters.

Soon afterwards, we brought on other concerned pro athletes, individuals, resorts and winter sports companies. Since then, Protect Our Winters has grown from a kernel of an idea into a worldwide network of over 130,000 supporters – a social movement on climate, designed to activate a passionate community and create the political will for meaningful action by state and federal policymakers.

And, while POW’s earliest supporters were renowned athletes and respected corporations, the movement quickly grew to include the wider outdoor sports community  as their playgrounds and livelihoods also depend on healthy winters.

This was the perfect group to give a national voice to outdoor sports, an industry that supports 7.6 million+ jobs and creates $887 billion in economic revenue. While the fossil fuel lobby may outspend environmentalists 20-1 in Washington, we share a passion that crosses party lines, a unique perspective that de-politicizes any climate discussion, and an industry with an economic impact that can’t be ignored.

Our key formula for engaging 60 million+ outdoor sports enthusiasts globally: relevance and authenticity. Though we can dress up for meetings, in the end we are pro athletes, dirtbags and diehards; for us, winter is not just a passion, but a way of life.

Right now, we have the luxury of worrying about how climate change might impact the outdoor industry. Right now, we get to help dictate the outcome rather than react to a foregone conclusion. If we sit on our hands for the next two decades, we won’t be worried about powder days, tourism or having fun. We’ll be worried about the stability of our environment, our jobs and our economy.

We All Need Winter.

Get Clear

🌹

When you feel stuck, in a rut, or your life is not what you would wish it to be, it is time to get clear on what it is you truly desire. Your desires will change over the course of your life experiences and being clear on what it is you want now is an important step in moving towards them.

🌹

Writing, talking with your angels/guides, or trusted counselor/advisor are all ways that can assist you in gaining clarity about what it is you truly want out of the situation.

🌹

Before setting an intention and taking the appropriate next step, having clarity is the key that will assist you in taking the right course of action.

The First Vaccine for Bees

Scientists at the University of Helsinki, Finland have developed a vaccine for bees. The vaccine called “PrimeBee” targets the deadly bee disease American foulbrood and can be delivered on a sugar patty.  The vaccine is not yet available for sale, but I’m thankful researchers are working hard to save bees. You can read more in this article from NPR

A Special Coat for Zoey

Zoey lives in Michigan where the winters are very cold. Having cerebral palsy and being in a wheel chair made it hard for her to bundle up for recess. So Zoey’s mom invented a special coat. I hope you enjoy meeting Zoey and learning more about her mom’s invention in this video.

UPDATES & BEST WISHES

Good Day my Angels!  I pray all are well and getting ready for this 2018 Holiday Season.  I can hardly believe it’s here – and so soon.  Or at least it feels like it “so soon.”

I apologize for not being around lately as I have been setline in still here in our new area we call home within the great state of Texas.  Our move from California to Texas has been eventful and interesting to say the least.  Upon arrival in Texas we moved into a 200 square feet home (minimalists indeed) brining only what we needed and not what we wanted or any excess “stuff.”  Most of our things we donated or sold so as to downsize immensely.  There is no room within 200 square feet of space with two adult humans and our four (4) fur babies (kitties).  While I find myself still adjusting the babies and there papa have adjusted very well and seem totally content.  At times I am but I have to say it is not without its limitations living within a small space for me.  At the present I remain in great Faith and Positivity that I am where I am supposed to be at this moment in time and am appreciative for all my Angels and every day that I get to wake up to the beautiful faces of my babies.

Christmas – New Years – Seriously!

I am SO NOT READY and cannot get into the spirit of the Holidays.  I have no décor up or bought anything as of yet.  We are so minimal and truly do not “need” anything and our wants would be just stuff to clutter up our tiny space.  So, anything we buy or bring into our space another item ahs to go in which to conserve the space.  Hmm…. we’ll see as I sit here thinking about what to do.  A Charlie Brown tree for sure is in my future and gifts for our babies.  How about you Angels – are you ready for the Holidays?  What are your plans?  I am, however, looking forward to a New Year and New You attitude!  I am excited about that and all the possibilities that come along with it.  How about you?

ASK

Life is precious and a gift no matter where you stand at this moment in time and space.  Be grateful my Angels for every breath you take and the lives around you.

I wish you ALL a very Happy and Safe Holiday Season and look forward to an amazing 2019.

Always with much Light and Love!

Angels Landing—a challenge I didn’t try

Every now and then my common sense kicks in! Recently it was helped along by a hip that was complaining bitterly (recovered now).

This all happened in Zion National Park when I decided NOT to tackle the 2.5-mile, 5-hour hike to Angels Landing. I mean, seriously, what business did I have scaling a ‘mountain’ that rises almost 1500 feet and includes more than 20 steep, treacherous switchbacks?

The trail, cut into solid rock in 1926, has an especially challenging last half mile. According to one website, that section of the trail is ‘strenuous and lined with numerous sharp drop…

“A Different Kind of Angel” by Paulette Mahurin

Christoph Fischer's avatarwriterchristophfischer

I’m delighted to finally prewsent my own review of this marvellous book. I am a big fan of Paulette who has been on my blog plenty of times and yet, not often enough.

A different kind of Angel
by Paulette Mahurin
is particularly powerful as it is based on a true story. When a brave female journalist infiltrates a women’s asylum in 1887 she finds shocking malpractice and saves the lives of endless women who have been wrongfully institutionalized.
On the way Mahurin details the lives of several ‘inmates’, for many of whom the asylum was the culmination of already horrific lives. The main protagonist being a Jewish woman from Russia who was the sole survivor of her family of the Russian pogrom.
Told in dramatic voice and an affecting manner this is a gripping read that teaches much about history, humanity and the strength of the human spirit. Another…
